EAST HARTFORD — A gift from the Petit Family Foundation will soon help Goodwin College nursing students prepare for real-life medical conditions and emergencies.
According to the college, the foundation has provided a $17,728 grant to fund the purchase of a SimMan ALS, a realistic model that assists in lifesaving training.
The simulator, made by medical model and training needs company Laerdal, supports the development of skills like airway management, breathing assessment, palpation, fluid resuscitation, ECG interpretation, defibrillation, and ultrasound assessment, and diagnosis.
The model also can be used for American Heart Association advanced cardiac life support courses.
“This grant will have an incredible impact on our nursing program,” said Goodwin Nursing Department Chair Janice Watts in the release. “It is a dream come true.”
Brooke Penders, Goodwin’s vice president for advancement, said the college was honored by the Petit Foundation’s gift, which she hopes will help students prepare for their future careers.
“This enhancement to our labs gives students an even greater skill set when they go out into the workforce,” Penders said in the college’s release.
The Petit Foundation contributes to a wide range of projects and organizations with the aim of supporting education for young people, women in the sciences, and victims of chronic illness and violence.
The ninth annual Petit 5K Road Race, which benefits the foundation, will be held Sunday, July 17, in Plainville. Those looking to participate can read more by visiting
