Plainville planning road closures for annual GE 5K Road Race

PLAINVILLE — On July 15, hundreds of runner, joggers and walkers will converge on Plainville for the GE 5K Road Race. As they prepare to hit the streets, a number of roads will be closed to vehicular traffic at various times.

From 6:30 to 11 a.m. Woodford Avenue, where GE Industrial Solutions is located, will be closed to traffic from its intersection with Route 10 to its intersection with Linden Street.

At 7:30 a.m., this road closure will extend to Dallas Avenue. Police will direct drivers to detours.

From 8 to 9:30 a.m., Route 10 from Woodford Avenue to Stillwell Drive will also be closed to vehicles. Whiting Street can be used as an alternative route and police will direct drivers to detours. The race will start at 9 a.m. on Route 10 near its intersection with Maple Street.  At that time, the entire route, including Stillwell Drive, Rosemont Drive, Pickney Avenue, Arcadia Avenue, Higgins Avenue and Dallas Avenue will be closed to vehicle.

Side streets off those roads will be temporarily barricaded during the race and police and volunteers will be posted throughout the course to ensure runners’ safety. A police car will lead the runners and a trailing vehicle will follow them.

For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, a 1.5 mile fitness walk will also start at 9 a.m.

Children can participate in a 400-meter run on Woodford Avenue before the race. Other information, including maps, parking areas and application forms are available at www.PetitRoadRace.com.

The Petit Family Foundation honors the memories of Jennifer Hawke-Petit, Hayley Elizabeth Petit, and Michaela Rose Petit by continuing the kindness, idealism and activism that defined their lives.

The foundation’s funds are given to foster the education of young people, especially women in the sciences; to improve the lives of those affected by chronic illnesses; and to support efforts to protect and help those affected by violence.

After a home invasion on July 23, 2007, Jennifer Hawke, Hayley Elizabeth, and Michaela Rose Petit tragically lost their lives. Hayley, and later on Michaela, were dedicated to community service and charitable giving, especially with the MS Society in support of their mother’s illness. After their deaths, the foundation was created as a means of continuing their work and spirit.

All proceeds from this event will go to the Petit Family Foundation.
